Abayomi Olonisakin, the immediate past Chief of Defense Staff, announced that all the territories controlled by Boko Haram insurgents have been reclaimed by the Nigerian military.
He noted that when some villages in the north-east were overrun by the sect, the military conducted several assaults against the insurgents.
Olonosakin added that on December 22, 2016, after months of violence, men from Operation Lafiya Dole announced the successful takeover of ‘camp zero’ in the forest of Sambisa.
During the handover ceremony to his successor, Leo Irabor, at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja on Friday, Olonisakin made this known.
He said the insurgent flag retrieved during the military operation was subsequently presented to Buhari at a dinner hosted by the presidential brigade guards.
He also made mention of the success that was achieved by the army, the Government and Nigerians during his tenure as a service chief.
He said: “We all could recall that at the inception of the current administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, the Boko Haram terrorist group held sway in parts of north-east Nigeria, where the sect occupied 20 out of 26 local government areas in Borno state.
“Our immediate challenge on the assumption of office was to flush out Boko Haram and restore Nigeria’s sovereignty over these occupied territories.”
“Thankfully, with the help of the political leadership and indeed of all Nigerians, under my leadership, Nigeria’s armed forces were able to regain all the territories that were then under Boko Haram’s control.Source: Multiloaded
